Maternal Health/Childbirth Research?

I'm looking to connect with physios doing (or interested in) maternal health research, particularly studies in labour and birth.

I'm a medical anthropologist, and I'm developing a project looking at pelvic mobilisation techniques (like the side-lying release and internal rotation of the femur) in labour.

This is true. A lot of new approaches are being explored. People are now using more than just medication and moving to physical therapy, acupuncture, and even mindfulness techniques. AI is helping with this too and developing new ways! What’s really exciting is the shift toward treating pain not just as a symptom to be eliminated, but as something that’s managed in a way that addresses the whole person - both physically and emotionally. Pain management is moving in a direction that’s more integrated, innovative, and tailored.

Acupuncture definitely has the potential to be applied more 🤗 especially when you consider how many people have found it helpful for managing chronic pain and other conditions. Some might argue more evidence is needed but there’s already a body of evidence suggesting it can be beneficial for certain conditions.

AI is a very powerful tool. It has taken over our society in a matter of months. It has a lot of potential to help meet the growing demand for physiotherapy. It can assist in streamlining processes, improving diagnostics, and even providing personalized treatment plans, which can make therapists' workloads more manageable. It’s not about replacing people, but rather enhancing what they do, making treatments more efficient, and allowing them to focus more on patient care. So, it’s not an either/or situation - it’s about finding ways for AI and human expertise to work together.

A combined approach works best for chronic pain—manual therapy, exercise, and patient education. Adding in some cognitive-behavioural techniques helps address the mental side, too. Consistency and a tailored plan make a big difference.
