Consultant physiotherapist Kay Stevenson will deliver keynote speech at research conference in April

The organisers of a conference for aspring and experienced researchers have said they are ‘thrilled’ that a veteran consultant physiotherapist has accepted an invitation to deliver the keynote address at their conference in April.

Kay Stevenson, who has clocked up more than 20 years as a consultant physiotherapist, will speak at the Physiotherapy Research Society’s (PRS) conference, which takes place at the University of Hertfordshire’s Fielder Centre on 24 April.

Kay is a senior knowledge mobilisation fellow at the Keele University’s Impact Accelerator Unit and a consultant physiotherapist at Midland Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust. She is also an honorary professor at Keele University’s Medical School and has a consultant physiotherapist since 2002.

PRS conference themes

The theme of this year’s PRS conference is ‘Beyond the Dataset: Engaging People, Powering Change’ and the aim is to encourage all allied health researchers and clinicians to share work that translates data and evidence into action.

Key areas of practice and research include

  • artificial intelligence and digital innovation in healthcare
  • patient and public involvement in research design and delivery
  • collaborations with stakeholders, commissioners, and policymakers
  • research that drives innovation in practice, education, or service development

About Kay Stevenson

At the IAU, Dr Stevenson leads the Knowledge Mobilisation theme and is responsible for embedding the best evidence into system and practice across health and local authorities. She provides mentorship to a wide range of fellows, including the West Midlands Applied Research Collaborative Knowledge Mobilisation Fellows.

Her various roles allow her to provide clinical leadership and expertise to a local, regional and national teams with the aim of improving evidence-based care and building Knowledge Mobilisation capacity. She leads the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Integrated Care Systems Musculoskeletal (MSK) Stewardship and Transformation Group and recently completed a three-year secondment to NHS England Midlands team as an MSK adviser.

Kay qualified as a physiotherapist at the Queen Elizabeth School of Physiotherapy in Birmingham in 1988. She has experience in both secondary and primary care physiotherapy services and have undertaken many post-graduate courses in the management of musculoskeletal disease.

In 1999, she was appointed as a lecturer practitioner at the School of Health and Rehabilitation at Keele University. ‘This allowed me to develop my teaching skills, undertake a national teaching qualification and complete an M.Phil,’ she notes on her biography page on Keele University’s website.

In her clinical role, Kay delivers clinical sessions and provides clinical leadership in the Musculoskeletal Interface Service. This innovative service manages more than 10,000 patients annually with non-surgical musculoskeletal disease. It has been highlighted by the Department of Heath as an exemplar of best practice

Kay recently completed a National Institute for Health Research Knowledge Mobilisation Fellowship. She enjoys keeping fit by playing squash and golf.
