Physiotherapist Liam Newton is kicking of a series of weekly talks for cyclists on the evening of Thursday 20 February at the South Downs Social café in Winchester.

Liam, who manages the University of Winchester’s Health Clinic – where he also treats patients – graduated in physiotherapy at the University of Birmingham in 2015. In his talk, titled Pain-free performance (see image of poster), Liam will focus on some of the common aches and pains experienced by cyclists – such as knee pain, lower back strain and neck stiffness – and explain how riders can avoid and manage these problems.

After graduating, Liam initially honed his skills in the NHS before going on to work with Hampshire CCC cricketers and aspiring footballers at Southampton FC. In his day job, Liam works with the university’s physiotherapy students while they are on placement in the clinic.

Two more sessions geared for cyclists

The second speaker in the series for bike riders is Tim Holder, a senior lecturer in sport and exercise psychology at the University of Winchester. On 27 February, Dr Holder will discuss the importance of mental strength and ‘self-talk’ in helping riders to achieve their cycling goals.

In a talk titled Perfect Your Ride (6 March), Chris Whittle, a senior lecturer in sport and exercise biomechanics at the University of Winchester, will focus on the science of bike fitting. Frame size, crank length, bar height, saddle position and cleat placement – how can these affect performance, Dr Whittle will ask.

A ‘passionate’ partnership

Jo Stark, head of innovation and commercialisation at the University of Winchester, said: ‘The university has a wealth of expertise in working with athletes at all levels and in various disciplines.

‘Working in partnership with the team at South Downs Social is enabling us all share our knowledge, experiences and passion with the region’s cycling community, I’m really looking forward to this series of talks.’

Tickets for these events, cost £5 including a beer, wine or soft drink on arrival. Each talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Doors open at 7pm and talks start at 7.30pm.
